
The Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has released the First Advance Estimates of production of major Kharif crops for 2021-22 on September 21, 2021.
The total food grain production in India for 2021-22 Kharif is likely to be 150.50 million tonnes which is a tad short of the target of 151.43 million tonnes but higher than the average of last five years from 2015-16 to 2019-20 of 137.84 million tonnes by 12.71 million tonnes.

According to the Estimates, the production of Rice which typically leads the Kharif season in India is predicted to be 107.04 million tonnes for 2021-22 which is higher by 2.74 million tonnes and 2.63% higher than the target of 104.30 million tonnes. The estimate is also higher by 9.21 million tonnes and 9.41% higher than the five-year average of 97.83 million tonnes.
Cereals’ production is expected to be 141.04 million tonnes for Kharif 2021-22 season which is slightly lower by 0.57 million tonnes of the target but is little higher than the 2020-21 4th estimate of 140.87 million tonnes. The First Advance Estimates of production of cereals is much higher than the 5-year average of 129.75 million tonnes by 8.7% and 11.29 million tonnes.
From a pulses’ perspective, the First Advance Estimates of production of major Kharif crops for 2021-22 indicates a production of 9.45 million tonnes which is 0.37 million tonnes lower than the target of 9.82 million tonnes. It is however higher than 4th Advance Estimates for 2020-21 of 8.69 million tonnes and 17% higher than the 5-year average pulses production. However, the production of all pulses in the Rabi season is almost three times that of Kharif.
In pulses, Tur leads with 4.43 million tonnes estimated for Kharif 2021-22 in the First Advance Estimates of production of major Kharif crops as compared to the target of 4.30 million tonnes and Fourth Advance Estimates for 2020-21 of 4.28 million tonnes. It is also 17% higher than the 5-year average of 3.79 million tonnes.
Coming to the group of commodities that is very much in the limelight because of stiff price rises of 50%, i.e., oilseeds, the First Advance Estimates predicts their production of 23.38 million tonnes in Kharif 2021-22. This is 2.61 million tonnes and ~10% lower than the target of 26 million tonnes for oilseeds. It is also less than the Fourth Advance Estimates for 2020-21 of 2.4 million tonnes by 2.7% and 6 lakh tonnes.The First Advance Estimates are nonetheless higher than the 5-year average of 20.43 million tonnes by almost 3 million tonnes. The oilseeds as a group consists of nine oilseeds which includes Groundnut, Castorseed, Sesamum, Nigerseed, Soyabean, Sunflower, Rapeseed & Mustard, Linseed and Safflower.
The First Advance Estimates of production of major Kharif crops for 2021-22 peg the production of Soyabeans at 12.72 million tonnes which is 2 million tonnes and more than 13% of the target of 14.76 million tonnes. It is marginally lower than Fourth Advance Kharif Estimates for 2020-21 for soyabean which was 12.9 million tonnes. First Advance Kharif Estimates for Soyabean in 2021-22 is higher than the 5-year average of 11.4 million tonnes by 11% and 1.3 million tonnes.
For Groundnut, the First Advance Estimates of major Kharif crops for 2021-22 projects production of 8.2 million tonnes slightly higher than the target of 8.15 million tonnes. This is roughly 3% lower than the Fourth Advance Estimates of 8.56 million tonnes in 2020-21. However, this is 25% higher than the 5-year average production of 6.56 million tonnes.
For Sugarcane, the First Advance Estimates of major Kharif crops for 2021-22 pegs a production of 419.25 million tonnes, this is 22 million tonnes more and ~5.5% higher than the target of 397 million tonnes. It is higher by 20 million tonnes and 5% more than the Fourth First Advance Estimates for 2020-21. The First Advance Estimates of major Kharif crops for 2021-22 predicts Cotton production of 36.22 million bales of 170 kg each. This is 2% lower than the target of 37 million bales and higher than the Fourth First Advance Estimates for 2020-21 of 35.38 million bales.
